Alaska, at it's best: 7-13-20 SOLD at Gallery 4

I used a photo that was taken in 1996, by either me or my son, Matt, as reference.    I LOVE how it turned out with the colors i used.  I loved seeing the glaciers when we visited Alaska.  The ice was clear as glass in some places and gray as dust in others.  I really feel the atmosphere of AK in this.
I wonder how much it has melted since 1996.

In The Cups

The HAGS (Hjemkomst Art Group) all painted cups inspired by a Bob Burridge video we watched.. what fun to see them all together in our display case ...

Cormorant "Get-Across" Gifted to Owen

So, the Cormorant art club members had a painting challenge this month.  Of course, i love it when there is a challenge of sorts.  Not sure if there will be an exhibit of the finished works or not.  Only a few members stepped up.  I enjoyed painting this acrylic using minimal palette. Those are rocks, not snowballs.

Art Talk

I was asked to talk a little about my art that is exhibited at Trinity Lutheran in Moorhead, today.. It was so fun, not a large group but a very interested group.  It helps to have a story with each painting and most of them are true..

Red Spirit.. 11-21-22 Sold at Gallery4

I put the background in by using left over paint from another "update"of an older work.  while it was wet, i used the little brush that comes with hair dye, yes, hair dye, to make the marks.. purely an accident. Still fascinated with the cardinal, thinking of Carl's spirit..

If Frida was from Fargo SOLD @ G4 5-11-23

Fun project for a show by the Cormorant Art Group.  Faux Show.  This is my entry. Have so enjoyed hearing, reading and learning about Frida Kahlo, since I saw the movie about her about 20 years ago.  Her self portraits are stunning and i noticed her jewelry were sometimes depicted as ravens or wild looking animals, hence the "bison" images... tee hee.

Tissue Farm New title: "Drive-by Farm" Sold in Pekin '22

We watched a U tube video on painting skies...   i formed the clouds using heavy pigment and the handy Kleenex tissues..  Farm is from a photo i took out of the car window long time ago, somewhere in Minnesota, den....   I  Love watercolor !
9-25-21  Really got tired of the pale sky on this painting.  I took it out of frame and WHAM -- added a lot of Ultramarine Blue, magenta and yellows and then darkened some of the foreground.
"What a Difference a Blue Day Makes"..  that's a song, isn't it???  ..

Handy Dandy Man Sold to Dorothy Spielman a long time ago.

Going thru old photos of my paintings..  i remember painting an abstract figure on this at least 20 years ago... Didn't make any sense to me..  i kept painting over and over it..  Sweet friend, Dorothy Spielman purchased it.  May she rest in peace, so i kinda wonder what happened to it.  Her apartment was plumb full of her art and art of all her friends..

"Sad Onion, Hanging out with Peas and a Carrot" Gifted

This painting was posted last summer, done at a workshop.  I deleted the huge tomato using thick watercolor pigment. (It was an experiment to see if it was possible to remove stuff with watercolor)  It worked..  Couldn't resist adding the "man in the moon" face..
My wonderful son-in-law commented that he liked this painting "It spoke to me" he said.   It is his now.

Buddy Holly Hock SOLD at Pekin show 6-21

OK, OK,  I admit it, I had the title before the painting..
I saw and photographed my daughter's next door neighbor's fence and flowers and wah la...   Hollyhocks remind me of my childhood. Mom had planted them around the house at times. Also I remember when going into "Fran's Lounge", they grew along the path into the front door, ( I did use the front door after i turned 21)..
     Photo is kinda dark..  geez..

Cormorant Art Show 3-24 still life was donated to Pekin fund raiser.

What a fun weekend i had.  Good friends stopping by, getting compliments on my work, a few sales, meeting new people, spending time with fellow artists, doing a demo, eating sweets......
I finished my demo piece yesterday. My goal was to paint a colorful still life using only 3 acrylic  pigments, plus titanium white. Primary colors, of course.

After the Crash SOLD

Oh Dear, back into painting old vehicles???  i found a bunch of photos of old cars that i took years ago when we drove Route 66 on our way to AZ.  Planned to put some tepees on background, since the cars were parked at the TEPEE Motel, but gee, i loved the sky as it turned out. I painted  the canvas with Red Oxide and it does wonderful things with the colors i chose to use.
After my son, Matt posted my gallery4 wall on FB, he got inquires about this painting and others.. .. Months go by with no interest.. so it goes!!!

"Shine On" 2-22 Donated to Pekin auction

Giggle, Giggle..
Gallery 4's July theme show is titled "Shiny"..  i looked thru my "to paint" folder and found a photo, that i took in AZ in a gas station.   i "shined" it up a little. There will be a reception on July 11, 5 to 9, with food and drink.  Love those Gallery 4 artists.   2/22  donated

"TIME to Reap." new title. Gifted to Emma

Using a photo i took 15 years ago for reference, i enjoyed painting this acrylic.  It is rather playful and weird, i know.  Like i said b/4, I am running out of subject matter but could probably check out what is TRENDING..   hee, hee...
9-2020.  I showed this at the Gallery for awhile, then they announced that the theme for Oct will be TIME>  well I thought i'd redo this one, changed the season, so to speak,   the photo is quite pale.  i'll try again.   changed the title too.

Back Entry to the Greenhouse Sold At Gallery4 8-21

Using another photo from years ago, i would rather paint the messy back yard than the perfectly arranged inside of the greenhouse.. weird.  This is also acrylic. This square canvas was painted diarylide yellow before creativity started..  yes... love the names of my paints.

Boy, this photo is really pale.  anyway, i repainted on this today.  I never liked the white curtain on the left side.  Just because it was on the photo i took, doesn't mean it needed to be on painting.. i diddled around on this all day.  it is better. tomorrow, i must take a better photo.. eek.

Rear Window Sold per Facebook post.. cool

Am having fun painting on my square canvases .. Thanks, Beth..  nice Christmas present, for sure.  I had painted this window in the 90's in watercolor..  So fun to change mediums with same subject.. this is acrylic .. canvas painted Cobalt blue b/4 the real creativity starts.

"Like, Can You Do This?" Changed title to " Dance Stance" for a theme show 11-3-21 donated

I used a painting I did in the early '90's as reference for this one.  I always liked the body language of these young dancers.  The dynamics are already set between the older gal and the young start-up dancers.   Difficult decision made about background, but it is OK..   Titled changed to "Dance Stance" for a theme show at Gallery4.

Would you sit down? or row out? That is the question.SOLD @ Cormorant Show

An April blizzard, being snow bound, having all those new square canvas boards, and being a support member of Gallery 4 with a small exhibiting space put me in mood for another "da' lake" painting. It's an 8"x 8" acrylic piece.

Shopping on "vaca" with husband sold

I painted this about 20 years ago. I took the reference photo when we were in Hawaii at our son's wedding. (That is how i remember it was 20 years ago.)  She so wanted to buy some jewelry and he seemed to be against the transaction.
As usual, my favorite subject is "body language"and telling a story.

This old artist is in a gallery.. whee

Excited.. i became a supporting member of Gallery 4, downtown Fargo today. They are in a new location and will be getting alot of promoting and attention, i hope>   The gallery has been active for 35 years or so, as a co-op.   My greeting cards are special, as i use images from my past paintings, print them myself and give them quirky titles.
If you are in Fargo or visiting Fargo, Gallery 4 is at 115 Roberts St N. just a block off Broadway, where they say all the action is.. Stop in.

"Leaf me alone"

This was painted last year when i was in Oregon, I had picked up these beautiful leaves on one of my  rare walks.  Yesterday, I made it a little whimsical by adding those little whirl-y scribble-y things.

Ristorante 1993

This painting from 1993 is hanging at my son's home in Oregon.  I photographed it and thought i'd post it here.  My kids have many of my paintings in their homes. It is like visiting my old friends when i see them. I know, that is a little sappy.

Two Bowls, Two Cuties

Well, I'm back in ND. Many inches of snow fell yesterday, i felt like painting, needed subject metter... these are my bowls in my kitchen..  Acrylic with lots of texture. I used a back scratcher, stiff worn out brushes, stiff-ish paint to achieve it. Used only 4 colors plus white.  love doing that.   Almost added a curtain, but i'm not in a lace curtain kind of mood.............

Painted a little bit all 3 have been sold or gifted

I was able to spend 2 months in Oregon with my sons and their families.. As usual, i had a wonderful time, weekends at the ocean, eating out, teasing and being teased by grandchildren, going to movies, and a little painting.  I only took along a few watercolors and a tablet.. These are repeats of older paintings, kinda, as i remember them..  Back home now and golly it is cold and snow is piled up everywhere..
Rooster was a birthday gift to my daughter-in-law's bestie.

cowabonga SOLD @ Cormorant Show

I had a couple of artist friends over to show them the technique of lifting paint to form an image on gessoed watercolor paper that had heavy watercolor pigment applied to it.  Whew. that was a long sentence.
They did bird houses and fairies on their papers.  I once again did the Cow image.  It is a bit like  sculpting as you lift off the paint with brush strokes.  What fun!!!!
